Thipatcha Putthawong stars as Thailand registers 4th straight win in Tri-series

The Nepal women’s team is currently hosting Thailand and Netherlands for a 9-match Twenty20 International (T20I) Tri-Series at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur.

In match no.6, Thailand defeated Nepal by 5 runs and registered their 4th consecutive win of the series, solidifying their status as table toppers. Meanwhile, hosts Nepal have been win-less and were handed over their 4th straight defeat of the triangular series.

Thailand won the toss and elected to bat first. The batters got off to a decent start in the powerplay but were rocked back in the 7th over of the innings. Left arm pacer Manisha Upadhayay picked up 2 wickets and capped off her performance with a run-out on the last delivery of the over. Thailand had lost half their side by the 8th over, with only 34 on the board, and needed a partnership to post a competitive total.

Player of the Match Thipatcha Putthawong and Chanida Sutthiruang forged an unbeaten 50-run stand to take the total past the 100-run mark. Putthawong and Sutthiruang scored 25* and 27* runs respectively, while M. Upadhayay starred with 3 wickets to her name. Thailand finished their innings at 106/6 after the completion of 20 overs.

It was not an ideal start for Nepal during the run chase. The top four batters didn’t trouble the scorers much and were dismissed on scores of 5, 0, 3, and 0. The scoreboard read 8/4 by the 5th over, and the hosts looked in deep trouble. Puja Mahato and Rubina Chhetry stitched a 44-run stand to keep the hopes alive for a successful chase. However, the star of the day, Thipatcha Putthawong, finished with figures of 4/10 and a splendid economy of 2.50.

Kabita Joshi (24), alongside Roma Thapar (19*), took the game down to the wire but couldn’t get their team across the finish line. Nepal finished at 101/8 at the end of 20 overs. Phannita Maya picked up two wickets, while two of Nepal’s batters fell prey to run-outs.

Thailand’s Thipatcha Putthawong was awarded the Player of the Match Award for her all-round performance with both bat and ball. She was the second-highest run-getter for her side, scoring 25 runs, and claiming a four-wicket haul.

207 is the highest match aggregate involving Thailand and Nepal in Women’s T20 Internationals.

Thailand are topping the table with 8 points from 4 games and are well poised to reign as champions of the tri-series, with 2 matches remaining. However, Nepal continue their poor run and sit at the bottom with no points in their kitty.
