“There’s always a bit of drama with the England-India series,” Tammy Beaumont

England, ahead of the upcoming India series, have been buoyed by twin 3-0 sweeps of their white-ball series against West Indies after their 16-0 Ashes drubbing. Expect a sterner test from an India side as well, featuring a mix of seasoned veterans, returning stars, and up-and-coming talents. England has shaken things up under the new leadership of head coach Charlotte Edwards, captain Nat Sciver-Brunt, and national selector Lydia Greenway.

Sophie Ecclestone is set to make her international comeback after being out since January, joining left-arm spinner Linsey Smith—who impressed in her ODI debut against the West Indies—and seamer Em Arlott, who also performed well. Tammy Beaumont, who hasn’t been a regular in the T20I team since the 2022 Ashes, has earned a spot in the squad thanks to her outstanding ODI form.

Amy Jones and Tammy Beaumont put together a remarkable 464 runs between them against West Indies, with 424 of those coming as a pair in just two ODIs. With opener Danni Wyatt-Hodge managing only 17 runs in three T20I innings, Beaumont provides a strong alternative at the top of the order, especially crucial since former captain Heather Knight is out after suffering a severe hamstring injury during the series.

Knight is aiming to recover in time for the 50-over World Cup in India later this year, while Beaumont—who has played only five T20Is in the past three years and didn’t feature against West Indies despite being in the squad—remains determined to push for selection at the T20 World Cup in England in 2026.

Beaumont says, “It will be a really tough tour and series for us, but a really good test and a really good time for that. They keep finding more and more talent. There’s a lot of names that I haven’t played against before in this squad and that normally throws out some unexpected challenges… It’s going to be a tough challenge, but really exciting. There’s always a bit of drama with the England-India series, so I’m sure there’ll be some drama coming forward.”

“It’s been proven that if you perform at county level, you’ll get a go and then you’ve just got to perform where you get the chance. That’s something that tends to work pretty well in my brain, play what you see in front of you and, so far, so good.” England’s selection policy under new head coach Charlotte Edwards has been clear: reward domestic form.

Beaumont, who has been on the fringes of the T20I side since 2022, acknowledged the shift. Players like Linsey Smith and Em Arlott earned their spots after impressing in domestic cricket, while Sophie Ecclestone returns to international action after injury, further strengthening England’s bowling options.

For Beaumont, the series is also a personal milestone and a chance to stake a claim for the home T20 World Cup in 2026. Her perspective underscores the blend of ambition and gratitude that characterizes experienced players in a rapidly evolving women’s game.

“This India series, I’m just trying to really enjoy my T20 cricket and try to contribute in any way I can. Once you’re back in, you start looking at what’s on the horizon and it’d be amazing to play in a home T20 World Cup. For me, it’s just about enjoying every opportunity I get these days.”

The England camp has also been inspired by the example of new captain Nat Sciver-Brunt, who is balancing leadership with motherhood. Beaumont was full of praise for her skipper, saying, “She’s almost superhuman at times, just to be able to be a mother and a new England captain and perform at the level that she always has done. It’s just a testament to her character that she can just always take anything and everything in her stride.”

Sciver-Brunt’s form has been central to England’s recent dominance, while her off-field example sets a new standard for balancing elite sport and family life.

As the series kicks off, both teams are looking to lay down a marker for the future, with new faces and returning stars eager to impress. The stage is set for another chapter in the England-India rivalry—one that promises not just drama, but also a glimpse into the next era of women’s cricket.
