Amanda-Jade Wellington Joins Lauren Bell in the 50 Wickets Club in The Women’s Hundred

Few bowlers have embraced the big stage of The Women’s Hundred as commandingly as Amanda-Jade Wellington. She has added another chapter to her glittering career so far as she becomes only the 2nd bowler after Southern Brave’s Lauren Bell to complete 50 wickets in the Women’s Hundred, a landmark, the prestigious 50-wicket mark. Wellington’s journey in the competition has become a story of skill, adaptability, and relentless pursuit of excellence.

She achieved the landmark against her former side, Southern Brave, when she picked up the big scalp of Laura Wolvaardt (36 off 19 balls) en route to her impressive spell (15-4-25-1) for her side. She had a quiet start to her season; however, she regained her rhythm in the last few games for the Oval Invincibles. She currently has 5 wickets at an average of 25.20 and an economy of 9.45 in five innings with the ball for her side in the ongoing edition of the tournament.

It all started on 24th July 2021 in Nottingham. Representing Southern Brave against the Trent Rockets, Wellington’s inaugural outing was an impressive one, returning figures of 0 for 10 from her 20 balls. But for those familiar with her resilience and guile, it was only a matter of time before the leg-spinner’s artistry would come to the fore.

Wellington’s legacy with Southern Brave is carved in sharply spinning spells and irresistible wicket-taking form. Over two editions, 31 wickets in just 17 innings, at a staggering average of 11.67 and an economy of 6.48, signalled her rise as one of the tournament’s premier bowlers. Her knack for breaking partnerships and stifling the opposition saw her notch up two four-wicket hauls, etching her presence in packed English stadiums.

What set Wellington apart was not just her ability to take wickets, but her tactical intelligence: she mixed up her pace, length, and trajectories, confounding batters and often swinging tight contests in her team’s favour.

The 2023 season saw Wellington don Manchester Originals’ colours, embracing new challenges and adapting to a different team dynamic and home ground. Though wickets came a bit slower, four wickets from six innings at an average of 33 and an economy rate of 7.20, her experience continued to be a valuable asset for her side. Adapting to varied roles and surfaces, Wellington sharpened her skills as a thinking cricketer.

Her move to the Oval Invincibles in the following edition further showcased her adaptability. Faced with the pressures and expectations of a new environment, Wellington stood tall, claiming 15 wickets in nine innings at an average of 21.06 and an economy of 8.06 in 14 innings. Her guile and experience proved crucial as she mentored younger teammates while leading with performance.

Entering the 2025 (fifth) edition of The Women’s Hundred, Amanda-Jade Wellington stood at the threshold of history, 45 wickets in 32 innings, before the start of the season. However, it just took her five innings into the 5th edition, as she became the first overseas spinner to join The Hundred’s elite 50-wicket club.

Wellington’s presence on the field is more than just a statistical milestone. It is the affirmation of her craft, the product of countless hours honing control and creativity, and a beacon for aspiring young spinners around the world. Few can match her blend of loop, drift, and unerring accuracy under pressure.

The fifth edition of The Hundred is approaching the halfway stage, and Amanda-Jade Wellington has etched her name into the tournament’s folklore. The milestone has further inspired, enthralled, and defined what it means to be a premier spinner on England’s biggest summer stage.
