Zimbabwe’s bowling resources have taken a blow as 19-year-old Kelis Ndhlovu has been barred from bowling in international games following an ICC verdict on her action.

The ruling followed her being called during the first ODI against Ireland in Belfast on 26 July, after which she was sent for testing at the ICC-accredited facility in Pretoria, South Africa. The assessment confirmed that the 19-year-old’s left-arm spin action did not conform to the required standards.
In line with Article 6.1 of the ICC Bowling Regulations, she will remain sidelined as a bowler until she undergoes a fresh evaluation and demonstrates that her remodeled action meets the legal threshold. However, she is free to continue representing Zimbabwe as a batter.
Ndhlovu’s absence with the ball will be sorely felt. Despite her young age, she has already become a pivotal figure for Zimbabwe. She captained the nation’s U19 side during the inaugural ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup in 2023, marking herself as a player to watch.
Since stepping into the senior setup, she has turned in consistent performances: 13 ODIs yielding 19 wickets, alongside 51 T20Is with 44 wickets. Her effectiveness is further highlighted by her bowling average, which stands close to 19 in both formats.
The suspension strips Zimbabwe of one of their most dependable bowling options, especially given her knack for picking wickets in key moments. With the ball out of her arsenal for now, she will have to contribute as a pure batter until she receives clearance.
Although this marks a difficult chapter in her career, the door remains open for a return. Once her action is remodeled and approved through reassessment, Ndhlovu can once again lead Zimbabwe’s spin department.
For a cricketer only 19 years old, the setback may prove temporary. With her talent and record, Zimbabwe will hope to see her resume her role as a genuine all-rounder sooner rather than later.
